Training Workshops and Seminars

In addition to its annual conference, OGE offers numerous workshops and seminars throughout the year, both in Washington, DC and in other parts of the country, for executive branch ethics officials. OGE fully supports Executive Order 13160 mandating equal opportunity in all federally conducted education and training programs. In support of this policy, OGE provides procedures to follow in filing complaints alleging violations of the executive order. Analyzing Gifts Issues

Gift rules in the federal Government are designed to prevent employees from giving and accepting inappropriate gifts. This course gives you as ethics officials the tools you need to help employees make sound decisions about gifts.

Conflict-Free Job Searches

Job longevity is not an option for many generation X and Y employees. They pursue other jobs, on average, every 2-3 years. Often their pursuits take them out of Federal service. In addition, many retirement-age Federal employees are looking for jobs as they start the next chapter of their lives. This course equips you with the statutory and regulatory bases on which to advise employees on how to avoid job search conflicts.

Ethics 2.0 - Ways to Enhanced an Ethics Training Program with New Media Tools

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has embraced Web 2.0 tools and new media capacities to enhance its award winning ethics training program. This session will introduce you to how agencies can utilize new technology to enhance their ethics training and communications with employees. The session will include a walk-through of USAIDs internal website, highlighting its Ethipedia within the agency-wide wiki, Ethics Tips-of-the-Day program, and Collaboration Space, an internal resource for USAID attorneys around the world.

Essential Skills for Training Online

Would you like to provide live, instructor-led training to your agency's employees who are spread out across the country or even across the globe? In this participation-heavy course you will learn the skills needed to deliver effective, engaging, and interactive training using Web-conferencing technology. Session I is a short, mandatory introduction to web-based training. In Session II, you will experience the virtual classroom first as a student and then in Session III you will practice your newly learned skills as an instructor during the third session.

Introduction to Conflicts of Interest - The Law, Appearances, and Prospective Employment

As a new ethics official, it is your job to accurately interpret the ethics rules that define ethical behavior. This requires recognizing when employees have conflicts of interest or even the appearance of conflicts. Conflicts take a variety of forms from violations of the conflict of interest laws to violations of the impartiality and seeking employment rules in the Standards of Conduct. As new ethics officials, it is important that you are knowledgeable in how to analyze conflicts. This course introduces you to ethics and shows you how to analyze conflicts of interest and impartiality issues.

Course Length: 2 Days

Intended Audience: Ethics officials who want to interpret the ethics rules that define ethical behavior.

The Ethics Pledge Commitments

This session will review Executive Order 13490, outline the elements of the commitments set out in Paragraphs 1 through 5 of the Ethics Pledge, and identify how the Lobbying Disclosure Act is relevant to certain of the commitments.

Working with 208 Exemptions

This session will provide a brief review of the criminal conflict of interest statute 18 U.S.C. 208 and will introduce participants to some of the most common exemptions to the statute issued by OGE in 5 CFR part 2640. Among the exemptions discussed will be the securities de minimis; sector fund de minimis; and exemptions for diversified mutual funds, employee benefit plans, leaves of absence from institutions of higher education, and employment interests of special Government employee advisory committee members.

Session Length: 2.5 hours

Intended Audience: Ethics officials who would like brief review of the criminal conflict of interest statute 18 U.S.C. § 208 and learn some of the most common exemptions to the statute issued by OGE in 5 CFR part 2640.

New Ethics Official Certificate Program (Atlanta, GA)

The U.S. Office of Government Ethics is pleased to announce a three-day New Ethics Official Certificate Program on September 21-23, 2010 in Atlanta, GA. The Certificate Program is designed for new ethics practitioners. There are no pre-requisites for this program. However, registration is limited to those who have performed ethics duties either full time or part time for no more than 3 years.

Program Length: 3 days

Intended Audience: New Ethics officials who have performed ethics duties either full time or part time for no more than 3 years.
